Earlier this year, I remember mentioning that we were working on EM Zine Issue 4–and here it is. This is the first ever event we’re having for EM and it’s going to be exciting to see how this’ll go. The launch is going to be on March 22nd (Saturday), at Exile On Main Street, Leon Guinto Street, Malate, Manila (across from Taft Avenue, near DLSU). Details are on the poster above–you can also head to the Facebook event page to see more.
I think that this is definitely the swankiest EM Zine in terms of layout (although the first one took the cake for binding).
As for my work that’s in here–I’m a little bit nervous about it. Stories For Other People, Part 1 is included along with two other works entitled Recipes For Fear and Air Hunger. For now, I’m good with this decision to publish a “bulk project” like the installment of Stories For Other People but I get the feeling I’ll change my mind about that eventually. We shall see!
Also featured in the issue are comics by FFY, artwork by Trizha Ko along with stories by Noel Villa and poems by Ronaldo Recto.
So today I downloaded this really nice software called Scribus–it’s the Open Office-compatible, simpler counterpart of InDesign and it has become my new addiction. I’m currently layouting Stories For Other People, Part 1 which I’ll be printing out and mailing to people within the next few weeks. 🙂 [More info on that here.] Feel free to download the sampler (which contains part of the introduction to the project) below!
So I decided to take this whole FB Art Challenge/Stories For Other People thing to the next level. Instead of posting up links which I did previously, I’ve decided to go all-out and release the stories in print instead. I will be posting the stories in four installments–six stories per booklet which I will send to all of the people who signed up for the FB Challenge. 😀 I already have the first installment done. This is nice because it also gives me time to process my thoughts as opposed to rushing to get something out because the internet is calling. I’ve finished with the first installment and am going to get these babies printed within the next two weeks, after which I will send them out to all the 24 people. 🙂 I’m unsure still about whether to make this available to other people. We shall see!
The past few weeks have been full of crazy and I’m sure that the next few weeks will also be crazy. I’ve made it a resolution to keep this blog updated, if only once a week–and I thought I’d post up a couple of updates re: writing and events and all that jazz.
1.) EM 4
We’re cooking up some stuff for EM Zine, Issue 4. I’ll make more announcements when things are sure na sure na sure na, but for now here’s the cover and our awesome layout this issue. Also, starting this issue we’re going to implement the issue editor thang–meaning every issue will be put together and curated by one member of the group. 🙂 This is exciting because it’ll also mean that that person can decide on the cover and whether or not the issue will be open for contributions or if it’ll have a theme.
This issue’s editor is my friend Noel Villa and if you haven’t read any of his stuff, you are seriously missing out. Noel’s writing is crazy, he’s crazy and the issue’s crazy–I mean that in the best way. It’ll be FFY‘s turn in April, Trizha Ko‘s in June, mine in August and Ron Recto’s in October.
The work I have in here is very weird (for me): most of it is stuff that I feel like I didn’t write. Although I guess that’s normal seeing as how 6 of these stories are filed under Stories For Other People, Part 1–these are basically the polished versions of the first stories I completed for the 2014 FB Art Challenge. These things in general aren’t my thing but it feels good to be trying new things. Among these, though there are some stories which I feel like I would’ve put out regardless (Notes to My Killer and Mirrors, Lenses). There are a total of 8 stories from me here, 6 of which belong to SFOP, Part 1. The other two are called Air Hunger and Recipes for Fear. I won’t say anymore, but I hope you guys enjoy them when the issue comes out. 😀
2.) Science Lessons, Volumes 2&3
I made a little announcement over Facebook about these two coming out this week but I’ve decided to push the project further back, into October of this year. I don’t want to say too much about it because you know how these things go–best not to say anything until you’re sure. 🙂 I am willing to share these preliminary cover studies that I made a few weeks ago, though.
I’m probably not going to use these, but I think something similar would be interesting. We shall seee, we shall see!
3.) Stories For Other People, Part 2
I’ve been working really hard on these. While Part 1 was an exercise in getting out of myself, I feel like these next ones will be less out-of-the-blue or less unlike something I would write. I am trying very hard to write something that I (along with the reader) woul really like to read. I feel like it can be done. Fingers crossed–I’m liking these so far. Oddly enough, a lot of these stories are more straightforward prose than I am used to but I don’t think this is a bad thing.
Also, instead of the usual .pdf thangs, I think I may just be posting new work up here. 🙂
Today is my last “free day” because I am (finally) employed! I start Monday but tomorrow is going to be spent preparing for SMO Comicon on Friday and (obviously) Friday will be for the Comicon itself. I won’t go into the details but the position I got is as a content writer and I’m going to start training on Monday! I can’t wait, I can’t wait, I can’t wait! This is going to be super exciting for me because it presents the opportunity to learn about non-fiction writing and how to better organize my ideas. I really hope this job is going to help me become more articulate and that I’ll do well there. Fingers crossed! In the meantime, however, I can’t seem to sit still. So I decided that I’m going to try and make this day as fun/challenging as possible. My health has also improved significantly since I slept for 10 hours last night (I got up at 7 today but made myself go back to sleep and I don’t have colds anymore–my voice still sounds raspy but meh, not complaining since my voice is pretty high anyway) so I am ready to do this!!!!!
I am dedicating this day to the Facebook Art Challenge that was going around yesterday. Basically, it promises the first 10 people who comment on your post that you will make a piece of art (a poem, a painting, a drawing, a photograph, whatever) by the end of this year (2014). But because I am bad at turning people down, I decided to give the first 15 people who commented work. So far 13 have commented and I’m already working on the first bit of work. I figure even if this day turns out “badly” and I only get one piece of work out, that’s still one work more than nothing. So yay!
My plan is to create a small work of fiction and an illustration to go with that because I have been wanting to work on my illustration skills as well. Each work will have to be able to stand on its own while a) having something to do with that person and b) having something to do with my affiliation with that person. I’ve begun cataloging items and memories with the people who commented and this is really riling me up. Here’s to hoping I get a lot done today!
